Activity 9 is divided into four parts, each dealing with an aspect of evaluating information:
Purpose

Before you do this activity, we suggest that you read a short article on Establishing the purpose of a site. 

Group Activity 9 A

What is the purpose of the site?

  1. Look at the following two sites below (click on the link) and answer the questions that follow:
Why do you think that this information was written and published? Is it meant to educate you, influence you, make you have strong feelings, or entertain you, or is there another purpose?
  1. Share the answers of Question 1 with your group by using the comments section on this page . Read their opinions and discuss their answers with them.
Once you have completed the above activity, we suggest that you move on to Activity 9B - Evaluating information: credibility.


Activity 9 B - Determining credibility of a website

The purpose of this activity is to help you to identify the elements of a website that show how reliable it is.

Before you do this activity, we suggest that you read a short article on Credibility of information

1.  Look at the following sites and answer the questions:


1.1  In each case, do you think that the author is qualified (i.e. does he/she have enough knowledge and experience) to publish this information?

1.2  What makes you think that this is a topic in which they have specialized knowledge?
A.   Genetics
2.  Share the answers of 1.1 and 1.2 by using the comments section on this page . Read their opinions and discuss their answers with them.

Activity 9 C - The accuracy of information


The purpose of this activity is to help you to determine whether or not information on a website is likely to be accurate.

Before you do this activity, we suggest that you read a short article on Accuracy of information. 


  • Which of the following two sites is likely to contain the most accurate information?

    A.   Zulu Dance
  • Share your reason for your response to the question by using  the comments section on this page
  • Read their opinions and discuss their answers with them.

    Activity 9 D - Bias

    1. Look at the two websites below (A and B) and answer the following questions:
    1.1  Can you detect any bias in the information that is contained in these sites?
    1.2  What makes you think that there is / is not bias in these sites.
    B.   Deforestation
